January 2018: Exploring the Galapagos Islands: Wildlife, Ecology, and Conservation

This project will focus on the study of the ecology, wildlife, and conservation of the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. We will spend the first two weeks on campus studying the culture, history and ecology of the islands, including introducing students to numerous species of the Galapagos that exist nowhere else in the world. On-campus preparation will include lectures, movies, guest speakers, and discussion sessions.  The 10-day trip will include a brief visit to the coastal city of Guayaquil, and we will then fly to the Galapagos Islands, where we will board a private yacht to tour the Galapagos Islands for the next week.   Students will learn why Darwin and others have been so intrigued by this unique area; there are no natural predators on these islands, and as a result, wild animals are found in open areas and are unafraid of humans.  Expect to see amazing birds, sea lions, iguanas, tortoises, and more! Spanish proficiency is helpful, but not required. We recommend that all students visit the UAB Traveler's Health Clinic at least 4-6 weeks before the trip ((205) 996-8728)

Expected cost is $7650.
