TEACHING
PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy is best understood
as a function of the values I bring to the classroom. I
embrace teaching as an opportunity to enhance student learning as a
transformative experience. In each course I teach, I want
students to feel personally changed by their participation. I
have found that transformative learning is most likely to occur when
students become engaged with the material on a personal level and
perceive the subject to be directly relevant to their own lives or
to an organization in which they are involved. Therefore,
whenever appropriate, I have partnered with the business community
to integrate service learning projects into my courses.
While I recognize my responsibility to
the integrity of the course material, I do not view my students as
empty minds waiting to be filled with my knowledge. Rather, I
see my role as going beyond being the subject matter expert to one
of encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning
and inspiring each student’s courage to grow intellectually.
